Elsag® Fixed Plate Hunter ALPR System cameras powered by Perle PoE Switches
Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) systems are used to assist in law enforcement, toll collection, and traffic data analysis. With cameras mounted along highways, bridges, tunnels, and overpasses, vehicle speed and license plates are captured and compared against hotlists, to identify suspect vehicles, or white lists, to validate vehicles on roadways as part of an HOV lane or tolling program. In addition, the data can be used to analyze traffic statistics, identify traffic patterns, or detect real-time anomalies, such as traffic jams, stationary vehicles on open traffic lanes, and other dangerous occurrences.
When Leonardo designed the Elsag® Fixed Plate Hunter ALPR System they had to ensure all components would be reliable, to ensure constant operation, and customizable, to meet unique installation requirements set by different customers and agencies. The ALPR system is comprised of advanced digital cameras with LED illumination and built-in processors connected to a Field Control Unit (FCU). Inside the FCU would be a powerful Industrial Switch to manage all of the data transmission. Leonardo had five main requirements:
- able to provide up to 30 watts PoE to the attached cameras,
- have at least 3 ethernet ports,
- output connection for Twisted-Pair Copper or SFP Fiber,
- be rugged enough to operate in -40°C to +75°C,
- be small enough to fit in the FCU.
Perle’s extensive range of IDS switches fit the bill. IDS-105GPP are rugged fanless switches that provide superior reliability in -40°C to 75°C. They come in a variety of models with 5 copper ports, 5 copper ports plus 1 fiber port, or 5 copper ports plus 2 fiber ports. In addition, these PoE Switches are classified as Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE). While using standard UTP cables that carry Ethernet data, the IDS-105GPP has 4 ports that also provide up to 30 watts of power to Powered Devices (PDs) such as wireless access points, Voice over IP phones, and IP cameras.
The Elsag® Fixed Plate Hunter ALPR System reads plates day or night, in all weather conditions, and from all 50 U.S. states as well as most foreign countries.
